The First Essen Company Run was held on June 9, 2011. A team of runners from NORRES was among those competing in the event. "Fun and enjoyment running in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere" was the motto for the day, which proved to be an unqualified success for the organisers. The race was open to anyone – from trainees to company bosses and from competitive athletes to occasional amateurs at businesses in and around Essen – and indeed mass participation was a stated goal.
Before the starting shot was fired, each team had a chance to have their picture taken by a professional photographer. The contestants hit the streets in Huyssenallee, opposite the Aalto Theatre, at 7 p.m. in ideal running weather. The NORRES challengers gave up their evening to take part in this exciting event and demonstrate their enthusiasm for sports over a distance of three and a half miles across Essen. The route offered plenty of variety and was chosen to suit all types of runner. It took in a large part of South Essen, finishing in the Grugapark botanical garden, where the runners and their families were invited to cool off with refreshments and wind up the evening in a more leisurely fashion.
